 BUSHRANGER PROFILES

Matt Gabitt

Matt Gabitt was one of the worst of the early bushrangers. He escaped from Macquarie Harbour convict settlement in Tasmania in 1822 and took to the bush with some other men. He soon became the leader. The gang attacked travellers and the outlying settlements and became so feared that the gang eventually found they received no help. They ran out of food and were starving so Gabitt arranged for some of them to be killed and eaten. Eventually he ate the entire gang and finally returned to Macquarie Harbour and gave himself up. It is said he still had a half-eaten arm in his pocket. He was Hanged shortly afterwards.
