Editorial

These refereed Conference Proceedings consist of a selection of papers from those presented at the Challenging Futures: Changing Agendas in Teacher Education Conference held from 3-7 February 2002 at the University of New England, Armidale, New South Wales. The Conference was organised by members of the School of Curriculum Studies within the Faculty of Education, Health and Professional Studies at UNE: Dr Jo-Anne Reid, Mr Tony Brown, Ms Linley Lloyd, Ms Kathy Jenkins, Ms Diane Hansford, Dr Ted Redden, Dr Bruce Cameron, and Professor Bill Green.

Conference papers submitted by authors for publication in these proceedings were reviewed anonymously by two expert reviewers, at least one of whom in all cases has been independent of the conference editorial committee. The review process, managed by the editors of this collection, sought to ascertain the level of each paper's research significance and contribution to the conference themes, the knowledge area(s) it addressed; and its clarity and the quality of its argument. Referees comments were collated and sent to authors, who were invited to review and amend their papers in accordance with any recommendations, prior to publication.

The demands on referees are considerable, and I thank each of the following for their contribution to the process: Dr Jeanette Berman, Prof. Marie Brennan, Dr Corinne Buckland, Dr Gerry Corrigan, Dr Sandra Frid, Mr John Garner, Prof. Bill Green, Ms Diane Hansford, Ms Kathy Jenkins, Mr Alex Kostogriz, Dr Chris Lawrie, Mr Jonathan Makuwira, Mr John Maurer, Dr Tom Maxwell, Dr Judy Miller, Ms Ruth Nicholls, Dr Peter Ninnes, Mr Mitchell Parkes, Dr Izabel Soliman, Dr Lew Zipin.

Each Conference Paper is copyright to the individual author or authors and may not be reproduced without permission of the author or authors. The ISBN number of the web-based publication of Challenging Futures: Changing Agendas in Teacher Education refereed conference papers is: ISBN 0-9581442-1-4. The conference proceedings are also available on CDRom: ISBN 0-9581442-0-6.

The conference was funded by an award presented to the School of Curriculum Studies at the University of New England for excellence in teaching. Its aim was to bring together researchers and practitioners involved in teacher education at the present time, in order to reflect and acknowledge the range of challenges to teacher education raised by issues such as social justice, new modes of communication and pedagogical reform. Much of the research reported in these papers draws on the efforts of teacher educators to meet these challenges in a range of situations, both around the nation and around the world.

Finally, all members of the Conference are indebted to the co-editor of these proceedings, Mr Tony Brown, of UNE for his able and willing assistance in planning, preparation, organisation of the technical aspects of paper presentations at the conference, and in producing these refereed proceedings.
