The 1984 race saw the last of the orphan Australia touring car class, Group C. As George Fury leads off from pole in a Nissan Bluebird Turbo from Peter Brock (Commodore), Allan Grice (Commodore), Dick Johnson (Falcon) & Jim Richards (BMW), Steve Masterton (Falcon) collides with Allan Moffat (Mazda RX7). Further back in the field chaos is ensuing from the stalled Jaguar of Walkinshaw. This is in fact the aborted start.
