TalentEd TALENTED INTERVIEW WITH A MUSICIAN COMPETITION
Entry Form The TalentEd Interview With A Musician Competion provides young researchers/writers to explore the world of musicians through interview and case study.
The student should make initial contact with an accomplished musician establishing their willingness to participate in the interview process and determining any conditions or restrictions on the interview, e.g., the musician wishing to see the finished case study before entry in the competition.
The interviewer should prepare a list of questions which provide structure to the interview but also allow room for exploration of interesting issues.
The case study or report should be written in a style that others would enjoy reading but which also preserves the integrity of the interview data.
There are two sections: Junior, 12 years of age or under; and Senior, 16 years of age or under.
The prize for the best entry in both sections in 2008 is $ 150.00 each.
Runner up prizes of $ 50.00 may be awarded at the judges' discretion.
Advice to entrants
For those who are planning to enter we offer the following advice:
• Your report or case study should communicate something both about the musician and about their music.
• An important skill in interviewing is to get the interviewee to talk rather than to showcase the interviewer's knowledge. Another skill in interviewing is to ask a question based on the previous response rather than a series of unconnected questions.
• An entry should consist of more than the interview transcript. It should include an interesting report or case study of the musician and his/her responses. There may be responses from different parts of the interview which could usefully be pulled together and discussed as one point.
• It is acceptable to conduct the interview by email or other electronic means if there are no distinguished musicians in your geographic area.
• Think about your experience of interviewing and define what you have learned. Different interviewers learn different things so we are not looking for a particular response, just evidence of the usefulness of reflecting on the process - the planning, the actual interviewing, the transcribing, and the reporting.
• Please respect the musicians and their workload when requesting and conducting interviews.
Conditions of entry
• The competition is open to anyone living in Australia or New Zealand who is aged 16 or under at 30 November 2008.
• All entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form including the signed statement by a teacher/parent/guardian verifying that the report or case study is the work of the entrant and the writers age.
• Include your name and age at the end of your entry, as well as on the entry form.
• There is no entry fee. There is a limit of one entry per person. Entries will not be returned.
• The interview report or case study may be between 1000 and 3000 words in length and must be your own original work.
• The report or case study should begin with a summary of the musician's achievements and a rationale for choosing her/him to interview. Most of the report should be in the form of a summary of the musician's responses to the interview questions and should include some direct quotations from the interviewee.
• A list of the questions asked should be included as an appendix. An edited transcript of the interview may also be included as an appendix.
• Contact details for the musician interviewed must be included, to enable us to seek their permission to print the winning reports, and to allow them to check the report to ensure that their ideas have been reported accurately. The musician need not be a very famous person, nor necessarily an adult, but must be a practising musician, either full-time or part-time, as work or a hobby.
• Prizes of $150 will be awarded to the winning entries in each section of the competition. Other prizes may be awarded to runners-up.
• The judging panel's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
