The first TalentEd School Students' Memoir Competition was held in 1992 and it has been an annual event ever since. A memoir is seen as a 'portion of a life. ... The writer of a memoir takes us back to a corner of his or her life that was unusually vivid or intense ... or that was framed by unique events. By narrowing the lens, the writer achieves a focus that isn't possible in autobiography; memoir is a window into a life.' (William Zinsser, quoted in Gillespie, J.S. (1991) The life if a seventh grader: Writing a memoir. English Journal, April 1991, p.48.) That is, the memoir is a small segment of the student's real life.
